Miners suffer heavy losses in bleak week

THERE was no relief today as the entire market fell yet again. The S&P-ASX 200 was down 92.5 points to 4887, while the All Ordinaries fell below the 5000 mark, losing 93 points to 4957.9.

Force majeure for Rio after rail car accident
(Friday, 5 September 2008)
RIO Tinto has said it could take up to three weeks to restore operations to normal levels at its Cape Lambert port in the Pilbara after this week declaring force majeure on iron ore shipments following an accident with a rail car which damaged the company’s dumper facilities.

BHP suspends WA iron ore operations after second fatality at Yandi
(Friday, 5 September 2008)
BHP Billiton Iron Ore has reported a second fatality involving an HWE Mining employee in two weeks at the Yandi mine in the Pilbara region and has suspended all Western Australian iron ore operations, except for essential services, until further notice.
